Dakar 2026: Dumuje-Abili finishes fifth in 100m backstroke heat

Nigeria’s Aidan Dumuje-Abili finished fifth in Heat 4 of the men’s 100m backstroke at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Tuesday, November 3, after clocking 1:00.79 at the Dakar Aquatic Centre.

The young swimmer was unable to secure a top-two finish in his heat as he competed against an international field in the swimming event.

However, his fifth-place finish in the heat does not represent his overall position in the competition, which is determined by comparing the times recorded across all heats.

Dumuje-Abili gains international experience

The Dakar outing provides another opportunity for Dumuje-Abili to test his abilities against some of the world’s emerging swimming talents.

The Nigerian has previously represented the country at continental competitions, including the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships and the Africa Youth Games in Angola.

He also claimed bronze in the men’s 50m backstroke at the 2025 Africa Youth Games, underlining his potential at youth level.

According to World Aquatics’ athlete records, Dumuje-Abili recorded a personal best of 1:03.80 in the men’s 100m backstroke at the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships.

His time of 1:00.79 in Dakar represents an improvement on that previous mark, although official records and competition conditions should be considered when comparing performances.

Nigeria continues Dakar 2026 campaign

The Youth Olympic Games provide young athletes with an opportunity to gain international exposure, measure their progress and develop the experience required for senior-level competition.

Dumuje-Abili appearance in Dakar adds to his experience on the international stage as he continues his development in swimming.
